Donald Trump delays 50% tariffs on EU to July 9

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he had agreed to extend the deadline for the 50% tariff on the European Union, pushing it back to July 9, 2025.

Trump shared the news on Truth Social, explaining that he had received a call from Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, who requested the delay on the original June 1 deadline.

"I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so," Trump wrote.

Earlier in April, Trump had imposed 20% tariffs on EU imports as part of his broader strategy of “reciprocal tariffs,” later reducing the rate to 10% for a 90-day period. However, just last week, Trump indicated the possibility of implementing a full 50% tariff on the EU starting June 1, criticizing the 27-nation bloc as “difficult to deal with.”

“Our discussions with them are going nowhere!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Despite this, he later confirmed he wasn't planning to negotiate a deal with the EU before the deadline, stating, "It’s time that we play the game the way I know how to play the game,” during a White House executive order signing.

Trump’s announcement came after von der Leyen referred to her call with him as a “good call” but noted the EU needed until July 9 to “reach a good deal.” She also reiterated on X that “the EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship” and emphasized Europe’s readiness to engage in swift and decisive talks.
